How can they work as a team?

October 16th, 2007

This is a thinking task related to what we are discussing in class - No I in Teamwork?

How can this group work together to get off this deserted island? They can only use all the things you see - one additional thing is that the man, Jon, has a cell phone in his pocket but the batteries have gone flat.

Your task is to clearly explain how they will all work together to achieve their goal - Is it actually possible? How will these different creatures work together? Does there have to be different roles and responsibilties to have any success?

Be creative - lets assume they can all understand each other, so therefore can communicate :) I am looking forward to seeing your ideas. I created this picture at Professor Garfield’s Comic Lab, log in with your name if you want to try it out.

    Hi guys!

This is a hard one! I dont think my brain can work it out… Oh well- I’ll give it a try! Only 1 for now.

Maybe they can turn the skateboard into a surfboard. The ballon can bring the mouse to safty. The bird ca fly. Ok, it’s a sily way -I know but I’ll think more deeply next time :)

Try and give each creature a role…
What role could Jon do? The Mouse? The bird? How can they use these things to get off the island?

Think of the skills each creature has? The mouse is small and has sharp teeth, he is also quite quick. The bird can fly - possibly only for short distances, has a sharp beak, feathers, and is very light. Jon has the skills of a human being, maybe he is good at building things, and organising others?

The objects also each have properties: The ball is inflatable, the skateboard and chair are wood and can be taken apart, the umbrella is made of material, and metal and can also be disassembled. There is a bucket and inflated helium baloon, and also a guitar with guitar strings. The banana peel could possibly come in useful somehow…Yes - it is tricky. What could be done?

    Hi,

Jennifer- I like your idea of the surfing.

I think that they could all sit on the skate board. They could then roll into the water. Maybe they could use the umbrella to paddle or to shelter from rain.

The mouse would then fly to the beach ball by using the balloon. The mouse could then attatch the balloon to the ball and sit on the beach ball. It would then get him back to shore, if the right wind came by in the right dierection.

The bird could sit in the bucket and play the gutair for intertainment and use it as a paddle.

The boy could put the banana in the water to attract fish so they can have a big meal.

I don’t think this would work in real life because they might sink!

    Hi!

I think Jon could use the skate board as a boat and tie the balloon to it to keep the boat afloat. They then tie the umbrella to the skate board, then with the balloon string as a sail. John could use the guitar as paddle and they could all sit on the skate board.

They could also feed on the banana skin for food.

To make sure the boat doesn’t sink the bird will pull the balloon up and john can paddle. The mouse can also paddle with the bucket-that way they all have a role.

There I have tried hard to use every thing!
Of course how was I to use the desk? What do you think Andrew? I will let Room 29 answer 1st Tessa, I really liked your ideas - please check your spelling and grammar next time. I fixed it for you :)

    Hi Tessa,

I like your way of getting off the island. You could use the chair to push along the ground to get into the water.

    Hi,

I think maybe the wheels of the skateboard could be taken off by John and the balloon could be tied up to the side of the skateboard platform. the mouse could bite off the strings from the guitar and use half of them to tie the ball onto the other side of the skateboard. The legs of the chair could stick to the edges of the skateboard so water won’t flood in. the bucket could be sat on the boat/skateboard to hold the mouse. the bird could peck a hole in the seat of the chair and john could put the umbrella in it and make a sail. The rest of the chair (the back of it and the front of it) could become a paddle. The guitar could be used as a fishing rod by tying the banana skin to the last few strings of the guitar.
    hopefully they get back safely.

    yours sincerely,

    Hannah

    Hey guys

John is going to be the boss and the bird and mouse think of what to do while john trys to cut the wheels off the skateboard to make it a surf board. He can us the end of the umbrella to hit the wheels off. The mouse can cut the guitar strings off and use them to strap johns feet to the surfboard and use the guitar to paddle to shore.

    Hi!

I have changed my mind about not posting! Actually I said only for yesterday. Now that my headache is gone I can think again!

Adding on to the skateboard turning into a surfboard thing, the sharp piece of wood on the chair the little mouse is sitting on can be tied onto the ‘surfboard’. The thing to tie it on can be the guitar strings. Then Jon can hold onto the sharp thing so he won’t fall off!
The bird can hold onto the balloon and just in case the balloon pops, the mouse can also carry the fabric on the umbrella to stay in the sky. Also it can also fly if both the fabric and balloon fails to work out.

The mouse can sit onto the bucket and stay afloat/ Jon can tie the bucket onto his ‘surfboard’ with the rest of the guitar strings.
This idea is way better than the one I posted before. I hope this works

    -Jennifer :)

    ROLES:
    John:
    To construct every thing
    Mouse:
    Leader
    Bird:
    Give them advice
You could take the wheels off the skate board and John could use it, take the strings off the guitar and use it as a paddle for John and use the umbrella as the sail and use the beach ball for a sinker.
Use the bucket for the mouse to get home and use the balloon for sail.
You could take the side bit of the desk and use it as a boat for the bird.
The banana skin can be used for energy.

I think that the little bird should fly only like half way and that john should use the peak of the bird and that he should take of the strings of the guitar and brake the guitar into half and take off the wheels off the skateboard and then get the strings from the guitar tie it up to the balloon and then if john can get the umbrella to block the sun and tie up to the hole with his shoe lace and the bucket can be for getting the ball when he’s goes out desk can be for paddle banana can be also for sun block.

  11.   Louisa on October 18, 2007 10:37 am

    Hi,

John would be the boss and the mouse could give advise and the bird can help create the escape root.

John could snap the strings off the guitar. He could then attatch the strings to the chair and skate board. John could sit on the chair and brake the umbrella stick off and use it as a paddle. The bird could roll the bucket through the water and rip the bucket handle off. The mouse could use the handle as a fishing line and put the banana on the end. The fish will be food. The material on the umbrella can be a blanket to keep them warm. The hole in the guitar can be a place where john puts his feet in so he can surf.

John can be the leader and he can use the desk to sit (The desk is made of wood) on and the
Mouse can sit on the desk with John and the skate board to paddle and also he can use the bucket to drink water from.
John can break some of the umbrella off and one of the guitar strings to help make the fishing rod to get some fish to eat and the banana can be the bate.
The bird can help them paddle but he wont paddle he will pull the desk by flying and if he gets tired he can sit on the desk and John and the mouse can paddle even though they were all ready paddling and the bird can migrate and tell them where to go.

    Hi,

We think Jon could be the builder and the leader. The bird could be the pecker and the mouse can get into small places.
The wheels of the skateboard could be pecked off by the bird. The skateboard platform could become the boats bottom. The wheels of the skate board could become a hammer. The guitar strings could be bitten off by the mouse and some of the strings could tie the ball to one side of the skateboard and the balloon could be tied up to the other side. The legs of the desk could be wrapped around the edges of the skateboard with Jon’s hats ribbon, so water won’t flood in. The bucket could hold the umbrella and Jon could turn it into a sail. The rest of the desk could become a paddle by the bird and mouse biting/pecking holes in the desk while Jon fits in the desks pieces to become a paddle. The guitar could be used as a fishing rod by Jon tying the banana skin to the last few strings of the guitar. Jon could then sit on the skate board while the mouse is perched on top of the sail directing them to the civilisation. The bird could fish while Jon paddles.

    Hopefully they get back safely.

We think that john can be the leader of the team.

To make a boat john can take a guitar string and tie the ball to the skate board to keep the boat afloat.
The bird can peak a whole in the skate board to put the umbrella in to act as a sail. The mouse can nibble the chair legs off and john can then tie the wood to the skate board with more guitar strings.
John can use the string less guitar as a paddle. Then john can tie his hat with the last guitar string to the skate board for the mouse and bird to sit on as for more space for john. They can tie the balloon to the hat also to keep it afloat.
They can use the bucket as a bail.

    Hello,

This is Jock, Frankie and Oliver RD this is our idea.
Firstly John could pull the wheels of the skateboard and like Jacobs idea the mouse could nibble a hole in the skateboard. Then john could stick the umbrella into the hole. Then they could tie the ball under the skateboard with a string from the guitar. Next they could use the chair to make barriers on the sides of the skateboard. Next they could make a small boat using a bucket and tying it to the big boat using a string from the guitar. The Mouse could go in the small boat. Now they could set off, John in the big boat, paddling with the guitar, The bird on lookout duty, and the mouse being pulled along.

  17.   jack jacob on October 18, 2007 10:42 am

Mouse nibbles a hole in smiley face stick umbrella diagonally into the hole, take screw off guitar and use to dislodge the trucks , use balloon to show what derision the wind is going, then tie the balloon with the guitar strings under the skate board and do the same with the balloon but use the balloon string. And the banana skin could be food. By Jacob and jack
